While researcher-to-researcher training is ideal for teaching protocol-specific surgical procedures, this paradigm may be less effective for teaching foundational principles of aseptic technique, intraoperative care, and postoperative analgesia. Historically, 100% of rodent survival surgery is conducted by research faculty or staff, with operators trained by more experienced research personnel. The majority of animal research conducted is performed in mouse and rat models, and a substantial proportion of this research requires rodent survival surgery. Our campus is home to a diverse animal research program that encompasses over 700 animal use protocols and 200 principle investigators.
